The Procedure

Is LASIK painful?

Quick Answer: No, LASIK is not painful during the procedure due to numbing eye drops. Some discomfort may occur during recovery.

One of the most common concerns about LASIK is pain. The good news is that the procedure itself is virtually painless.

During the Procedure

What You Feel

  • Numbing drops: Completely block pain sensation
  • Pressure sensation: Brief (10-15 seconds) when suction ring is applied
  • No pain: During flap creation or laser treatment
  • Slight awareness: You may sense activity but not pain

What You See

  • Bright lights (from the laser)
  • Blurry colors
  • Temporary dimming when flap is created
  • The laser has no visible beam

Immediately After

First 2-4 Hours

  • Mild burning or stinging
  • Watery eyes
  • Light sensitivity
  • Gritty or sandy feeling
  • Urge to rub eyes (don't!)

Managing Post-Op Discomfort

  • Take a nap (best thing you can do)
  • Use prescribed eye drops
  • Wear sunglasses for light sensitivity
  • Take over-the-counter pain reliever if needed
  • Keep eyes closed as much as possible

Days 1-7

  • Most discomfort resolves within 24 hours
  • Mild dryness or irritation may continue
  • Light sensitivity decreases daily
  • Artificial tears provide relief

Pain That's NOT Normal

Contact your surgeon if you experience:

  • Severe pain that doesn't improve
  • Sudden vision changes
  • Discharge or excessive redness
  • Symptoms worsening instead of improving
