Results & Longevity

How long does LASIK last?

Quick Answer: LASIK is permanent. Results typically last 10-20+ years. However, age-related changes like presbyopia still occur.

LASIK permanently reshapes your cornea, but understanding what "permanent" means is important for realistic expectations.

What's Permanent

The corneal tissue removed during LASIK does not grow back. The reshaping is permanent. If you have -5.00 myopia corrected to zero, that -5.00 will not return.

What Can Change

Normal Aging (Presbyopia)

  • Starts around age 40-45
  • Loss of near focusing ability
  • Happens to everyone, LASIK or not
  • Results in need for reading glasses
  • Not a failure of LASIK

Regression

  • About 10% may experience some regression
  • Usually minor (less than 1 diopter)
  • More common with high initial prescriptions
  • Can be corrected with enhancement

New Eye Conditions

  • Cataracts (typically after 60)
  • Other age-related conditions
  • Not caused by LASIK

Long-Term Studies

10-Year Studies Show:

  • 95%+ maintain excellent vision
  • 10-15% may need reading glasses for near
  • 5-10% may choose enhancement
  • Less than 1% experience regression requiring glasses for distance
20-Year Studies Show:
  • Original correction remains stable
  • Most vision changes due to age/cataracts
  • High satisfaction rates persist

Maximizing Longevity

1. Wait until prescription is stable 2. Choose experienced surgeon 3. Follow post-op instructions 4. Protect eyes from UV light 5. Maintain regular eye exams
